
I find it almost shameful to confess that I lived in Germany for more than ten years before visiting one of the former concentration camps. Even though I’ve been fascinated by the Second World War since I was a child watching scratchy newsreels in the classroom. Based on those early impressions, Germany is the last place I expected to find myself – and life in modern-day Germany is in fact a strange experience of watching a nation simultaneously trying to heal from those events and wanting to forget that they ever happened.
The camps are, for me, one of the most indelible images of the Nazi regime. I guess anyone who has ever watched the documentary footage of camp liberations is never going to forget it. Somehow the very existence of these places is like a symbol of how far we are prepared to go to disrespect human life and be inhumane to our fellow men.
